The Department of Botany embarked on its scientific journey with the inception of a Pre- Degree Course in 1967. Over the years, it has transformed into a prominent department, gaining recognition as one of the leading departments sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) through the FIST Programme. The department is committed to providing quality education and currently offers BSc, MSc and Ph. D programmes in Botany with specializations in the field of Environmental Science, Plant Physiology and Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Mycology. The infrastructure facility includes a well-stocked library with 372 reference books and periodicals, complemented by the Central library's extensive collection of 2543 books. Additionally, a herbarium (SSC) with approximately 7000 specimens and the botanical garden, Hortus Sirsyedicus, enrich the academic resources. Noteworthy attractions within the botanical garden include the Green House with Orchidarium, Mangrove Nursery, Herbal Garden, Nakshathrvanam, Bio Path, Ethnobotanical garden and Aranyakam, creating an immersive learning environment.
